HIV/AIDS Awareness Programs by POPET

POPET has made a significant impact in promoting HIV/AIDS awareness across Odisha, especially in underserved and tribal communities where stigma and misinformation are high. Recognizing the urgent need for public health education, POPET designed and implemented community-based awareness programs using street theatre, local storytelling, and interactive workshops to break myths and promote safe practices.
HIVAIDS Awareness Programs by POPET
Between 2006 and 2010, POPET conducted over 300 street plays across districts like Gajapati, Cuttack, Khurda, and Baleswar, focusing on early detection, prevention methods, and the importance of compassion toward individuals living with HIV/AIDS. These plays, presented in local languages and culturally relevant formats, helped normalize conversations around HIV, especially in conservative rural societies.

Key topics addressed during the campaigns included:

  • HIV transmission and prevention
  • The importance of HIV testing and counseling
  • Mother-to-child transmission
  • Discrimination and social stigma
  • Available government health services and ART centers
In many districts, the programs were financially supported by the Odisha State AIDS Control Society (OSACS) and implemented in collaboration with local health departments, NGOs, and educational institutions.
Beyond performances, POPET distributed printed educational materials, conducted Q&A sessions, and worked with community leaders and youth groups to extend the message further. These activities helped reach thousands of people with life-saving information and created a more supportive environment for those affected.
By combining creative communication with grassroots involvement, POPET’s HIV/AIDS awareness initiatives have contributed to reducing stigma, improving early diagnosis, and encouraging safe practices among vulnerable populations in Odisha.
